Mitsubishi MRX09

The purpose-built rally car that Mitsubishi fields in the no-longer-aptly-named 2009 Dakar (the venue for the race is now South America, remember) will shed its Pajero moniker as well as the nominal styling elements that tied it to the Mitsu SUV. Instead, the new MRX09 is the “Racing Lancer”. As such, the front end gets the Lancer’s “Run for your lives!” gaping maw grille and squinty headlamps. In its press release announcing the updated vehicle, Mitsubishi also reaches for another Lancer tie-in when it points out the happy coincidence that the MRX09’s bodywork “is redolent of the Lancer Sportback”, which is another way of saying, “it slopes down in the rear.” In any case, the Lancerized bodywork is more appealing than the squareback rump the Pajero racer wore. The new race buggy’s drivetrain consists of the erstwhile Pajero Evolution’s competition-prepped e4WD system and 3.0L turbodiesel producing over 260 horses and 480 lb-ft of torque. Air will be caught, sand will be kicked, and if history is any indication, a trophy will be hoisted when all’s said and done.

Lotus releases Eco Elise ahead of London Motor Show

Lotus releases Eco Elise ahead of London Motor Show

We’ve had our fill of limited edition Elises lately, largely because they rarely bring anything new to our favorite track-day toy. However, the Lotus Eco Elise stands apart. Sure, it’s got the same drivetrain as the Elise S, uses the same aluminum tub and shares the same shape as its arguably environmentally friendly siblings, but the differences are in the details.

To begin with, the Eco Elise uses a host of sustainable materials to make up the body and trim, including hemp, “eco wool,” sisal and a new high-tech, water-based paint that can be applied by hand, while still maintaining the grade-A finish you’d expect. All of these elements reduce the Eco Elise’s footprint throughout its lifecycle, limit the amount of energy used during production and simultaneously slashes 70 pounds from the standard Elise’s curb weight.

But Lotus hasn’t stopped there. It’s fitted a set of flexible solar panels on the hard top to help power the electrical systems, reducing the drain on the engine and improving efficiency. And there’s a new green shift light on the instrument panel that assists drivers in maximizing fuel efficiency.

You can read up on all the details of the Eco Elise in the press release after the jump, and expect more information and pictures when it makes its official debut at the London Motor Show later this month.

Rumormill: Hyundai headed into Formula D?

June 19th, 2008

Hyundai, Formula D

A factory-backed Hyundai drift team? It doesn’t sound so fanciful after last week’s introduction of the Genesis Coupe. Everyone who looks at the Concept Genesis has the same reaction, whether the powerplant referenced is a turbocharged four or a torquey V6 - “what a perfect drift car that would be.” If this rumor pans out, it seems that Hyundai had the idea first, and they want to give their new RWD coupe some street cred. Maybe we’ll find out more when the production version is unveiled at the New York International Auto Show. More grist for the rumor mill: there are serious discussions ongoing between Hyundai and a top drift team to field the Genesis Coupe in the 2008 or 2009 drift season. It would definitely go a long way toward bolstering the image of the new RWD Coupe from Hyundai to have it sliding around, tail out, kicking ass in Formula D, especially among the clientele this vehicle targets.

Supercar TVR Speed 12 road car

Supercar TVR Speed 12 road car

The TVR Speed 12 seems to be the forgotten supercar, although it certainly has the proper credentials to be remembered as one of the best. With a massive 7.7-liter V12 pushing 820 horsepower and a curb weight of just over 2,000 lbs., the Speed 12 has a power-to-weight ratio nearly twice that of the Bugatti Veyron. The stunning bodywork is done completely in carbon fiber and shifting is done with a true sequential gearbox. Then why the lack of attention? It probably has something to due with the fact that only one road car was built, along with a handful of race cars, and only one test was ever done by the media when it appeared in EVO magazine. The car is now for sale, and we hope the new owner doesn’t find it too much of a handful and wreck the one and only example. It’s not like it’s an Enzo, where you can just go out and buy another. No price is listed, but we would venture to guess it’s not cheap.

VW Scirocco racer

Volkswagen is pumping up the badass for the racing version of its new Scirocco sport-hatch. As we reported a couple of weeks ago, VW will be campaigning a race-prepped version of its latest release at the Nurburgring 24 hour race in the 2-liter turbo category in which a GTI took victory last year. The Scirocco racer will use the same 300-hp TFSI mated to Volkswagen’s paddle-shifted DSG, a set-up which, in preliminary testing, Hans-Joachim Stuck called “one of the most uncomplicated racing cars” he’s ever piloted. (We’ll take that as a good thing.) Stuck, a two-time Le Mans champion, will be among the drivers campaigning the pack of three Sciroccos at the race, alongside double world rally champ Carlos Sainz, VW board member Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, three of the four driver’s from last year’s winning GTI team and a couple of automotive journalists (once again, nobody asked us).[Source: Volkswagen]
